I could not have been more delighted when Joanna asked me to guest blog on simple blueprint! You might have seen my work here before as she and I have a wonderful respect of each others blogs. I live and work in New York City and I couldn't think of a better way to introduce December than by showing what I believe to be the most magical time in Manhattan.
The Holidays, From Me To You...
"High above the howling storm, frost on my beard, eyes searching wanefully to heartfelt losses, human touch. Seasons that follow, lead, churn deeply. Imagination does not go cold. Or does it? Here, take this pen, write it. Eyes, alive and moving beyond the snow, conjuring winters across the ridge, snowflakes dreamily to the page."
~Charles Mariano
Every year I look forward to December in Manhattan. People are a little nicer, stores are warmer, cafes offer up that special cup of cocoa and as you walk the street everything sparkles a little more than usual. I watch the ice skaters spin and fall and laugh. I look up at the lights on trees, the suspended stars on 5th avenue, and the dazzle of Herald Square. I listen to the bells of trumpets playing holiday standards outside Lincoln Center, and I never miss the first snow fall of the season as the city falls quiet under the spell of that magical white blanket.
All images were taken with my vintage 35mm Minolta SRT101 and black & white film, Tri-x 400 scanned exclusively for Simple Blueprint. They will be available as free iPhone backgrounds you can download here.

I miss NYC so much. I'll definitely have to head in to Manhattan when I'm back in NJ for the holidays. And you've convinced me -- my camera must come with me. I love these black and white photos. So perfectly New York.
